Winter budget wonderland

by Jan Cline

Ahh, February! This is the month that often feels like an early spring, then suddenly turns on you, leaving you cold, shocked, and waiting. This year has been no exception, starting in late October. We have been blessed with a few bright spots, but mostly it's been business as usual with old man winter. But soon we'll feel that spring thaw in the air, and the waiting period will be over.

Ahh, the city bud-

Committee to formulate the program recommendations, he is receptive to a needle exchange program to help prevention, and he understands that more money would help those in need. But it's just the winter wind a-blowin' if no money is specifically set aside. And here we are in February again: cold, shocked, and waiting. So far,

ACT UP

it's been mostly business as usual with old man government, too.

tion, prevention, and

care. In less than three months, the city budget must be finalized. You may know by now that many people are talking with our governmental leaders and asking them to lead our city on this issue.

Cleveland spends under $20,000 each year for education, prevention, and care. Columbus spends over $300,000 and Cincinnati spends over $250,000. If you know this information, I hope you also know that those cities have less than half of the cases we have here. The Citizen's Committee on

AIDS/HIV is developing a proposal for Mayor White outlining the programs that Cleveland needs. We have recommended a budget of $496,000, but any increase will help more education, more prevention, and more care can actually happen. If the money isn't specifically set aside by April of this year, those new proposed programs will sit on a shelf in someone's office, like a snow drift.

The mayor has been aware of the situation since June. He has provided us with a few bright spots; he appointed the Citizen's

this month, please

give a call to the mayor's office and the city councilperson in your ward and let them know what you feel. Also, stop in at a city council meeting (Mondays at 7 pm in council chambers) and voice your concerns in person; you can bet we'll be there. Your simple call and visit will help provide another bright spot in this dismal season of funding, and we'll feel an early spring thaw in the air and the city's AIDS budget. The waiting period will be over.

Walking the Dead

No, it's not another ACT UP demo; it is a benefit performance of the play Walking the Dead at Cleveland Public Theatre, directed by Amanda Shaffer and written by Keith Curran. The benefit performance will be on Thursday, March 3 at 8 pm. Tickets are $15 and are available from ACT UP by calling 621-2233. All proceeds will help continue our grassroots lobbying efforts to pass the "AIDS Cure Act" through Congress.

24-hour hotline is a success

by Judy Rainbrook

The Center is sponsoring a seminar on "The Art of Listening" on Sunday, February 20, from 1 to 4 pm. Admission is free but you must register. To register, call 5221999 before February 18.

LESBIAN GAY

The Center's new voice mail hotline system went live in late November. December statistics proved the system to be an incredible addition to the Center's information services. Eight hundred and fifty-five people used the system during the month. Some of the "hottest topics": married/bisexual parents (189 women, 343 men); bars and bathhouses (133 women, 347 men, 185 gender neutral); people of color (46 women, 112 men); and Center info (25 women, 66 men).

Community Service Center

Hotline hours will be changing. By the beginning of March, the hotline will be answered in person Friday through Sunday, 3 to 10 pm; and Saturday, 2 to 8 pm.

There is still room in the March hotline training schedule. February's class is full.

Three new groups are now meeting at the Center: Out Voice's Region 2 Caucus (third Saturday, 2:30 to 5:30 pm), Sign of Rainbow, a gay-lesbian group for the hearing impaired (fourth Saturday, 2:30 to 4:30 pm) and this year's Pride Committee (fourth Monday, 7 to 9 pm).

OF GREATER CLEVELAND

And, for all of you who have been meaning to learn Spanish, now you can take those lessons at the Center. Starting Wednesday, March 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, weekly Spanish lessons will be given by Adan Chinchilla. Cost is $10 per week and includes all materials. Call 522-1999 and leave your name and number to register. Flash: For all you world travelers, save Thanksgiving week! The Center will be sponsoring a gay-lesbian trip to England. This tour will take you places unavailable through your travel agent. More news soon.

Still needed: day-time volunteers to answer phones, type, copy, keep up the resource center; newsletter editor to oversee scrounging copy from staff and volunteers too busy to write it themselves. Call Judy or Linda if you are interested in these positions.
